Advice and answers from the BlogPress Team

What Is Your “Domain Name?”

This is how “myblog.com” will actually point visitors to your shiny new BlogPress blog.

Without this step, the address to your BlogPress blog will look something like this yourblogname.theblogpress.com

A custom domain name is completely optional, BUT it's recommended.

If you want people to be able to find you at an easy to pronounce address, i.e. cooking.com or fishing.com, you will need to purchase (register) a domain name for yourself. This is your personal address on the internet – it is not the same thing as your blog host - that’s us! (BlogPress)

Custom domain names average about $15 per year and are completely separate from your blog.

Think of your blog as your phone and a custom domain name as a "1-800" number intended to make it easier for people to find you.

What are the benefits of a custom domain name?

  • It makes your blog easier to reach, i.e. you can give your friends and visitors an easy to pronounce and type address.
  • It shows your visitors (and search engines) that you're serious about your blog, enough to not only start a blog, but also secure your own name on the internet.
  • It "should" help you with SEO as well. SEO is a very complex topic with very many factors, but you want every advantage you can get. If it's my blog, I always opt for a domain name.
  • It makes your blog portable. If you decide to move from one blog host to another, you just take your blog content AND your domain name with you. That way you don't lose the links you've built over time. If you didn't have a domain name, you would lose all the "search engine rankings" and "link value" you've built up so far, so in a sense you'd be starting over.

How Do I Change My Domain Name?

If you want people to be able to find you at an easy to pronounce address, i.e. cooking.com or fishing.com, you will need to purchase (register) a domain name for yourself.
